Shaana Burgess, BScPT
Shaana is dedicated to helping people achieve their maximum potential, whether it is related to sports, occupation, lifestyle or functional performance. Although she loves the challenge of treating both acute and chronic conditions, her clinical practice remains focused on educating her clients and injury prevention, with a special interest in knee and shoulder injuries.
In 1998, Shaana graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiotherapy. She completed a certification in acupuncture in 2003 with the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI) and obtained her Certificate of Intermediate Manual and Manipulative Therapy in 2006. In her pursuit to be a life-long student, she has expanded her training to include Concussion Management (in 2016 with Shift Concussion Management Program) and Clinical Pilates (in 2018/19) with Calibrate Clinical Pilates Education program.
Shaana is committed to evidence-based management strategies that she applies to all patients. Be it the gardener with a sore back, the teenager with a sprained ankle, the office worker suffering from neck and back pain from a motor-vehicle accident, or the marathon runner struggling with knee pain. She sees physiotherapy and pilates as a natural and perfect fit. Clinical Pilates incorporates the detailed physiotherapy assessment and the foundational knowledge of a Pilates experience program towards the ultimate goal of achieving efficient movement and stability of our bodies, while simultaneously improving overall body awareness, quality of movement and strength. As a physiotherapist, this blended approach allows for active rehabilitation strategies to be tailored to meet the needs of each client, their specific injury and particular stage of healing. Her recent training has led her to expand her practical definition of physiotherapy. Movement is central to our lives and if she can help people move more mindfully and efficiently then life can be “lived” and enjoyed to its fullest potential. This realization has influenced her therapeutic approach and she remains committed to doing “more than physiotherapy”, including collaboration with a client’s other trusted health care professionals to assist them on their journey towards wellness.
Outside the professional realm, Shaana enjoys family life and activities in the outdoors. Travelling and exploring the natural playgrounds (and kitchens) of the world will always be her passion. She has embraced the “sport” of parenting and is excited to introduce her little one to all the recreational activities that Vancouver has to offer. What other city can you ski a local mountain, ocean kayak, run a sea wall and golf all in the same day?
